EARLY ADOLESCENCE
The following illustrates a random draw of abuse and affect/effect cards for the years of thirteen, fourteen, and fifteen. Affect/Effect cards have been drawn from the ivory strand and are reflective of the child who externalizes his anger. (See Infancy/Toddlerhood, Preschool and Late Adolescence for examples of a child who internalizes anger.) This child is free from abuse for one year. Abuse Free cards offer some reprieve from the intensity of this exercise and at the same time reflect the often extreme circumstances that provide reprieve from abuse in real life. These circumstances are reflective of things that happen in adult life and have nothing to do with any action of the child.

Thirteen-Years-Old
At age thirteen, the thing to do is to check-out the magazines at the grocery store. Your feet seem to stumble into more things. Words come out of your mouth that you often don't mean. In 8th grade, the time between class bells is for jostling, playing jokes, shouting, and planning after school rendezvous. Your penis is often hard and you are afraid the girls and your teachers will notice. You are spending less and less time with your family and more and more time with your friends.
