LATE CHILDHOOD
The following illustrates a random draw of abuse and affect/effect cards for the years of ten, eleven, and twelve. Affect/Effect cards have been drawn from the ivory strand and are reflective of the child who externalizes his anger. (See Infancy/ Toddlerhood, Preschool and Late Adolescence for an example of a child who internalizes anger.) This child is validated at age eleven. In this case, the child's mother acknowledged it was not the child's fault he had looked at pornographic photographs. As a visual reminder of this validation, the participant would not remove a puzzle piece from his/her puzzle board.

Ten-Years-Old
You have perfected a belch that can rival any fifteen-year-old's. You are very careful not to let anyone see when your feelings are hurt--like girls do. You imagine earth-threatening situations and yourself as being the ten- year-old hero. You still want hugs but definitely NOT IN PUBLIC. It's not OK to let anyone know that you would rather be at school and in the fifth grade more than most any place else.

Late Childhood--age 10
The owner of the game store always lets you play a couple of games for free when you stop by on your way home from school. You are way better than your friends who do not have the money to practice. His free game machine is in the back room where you undress for him and his friend. You like showing off to your friends just how good you are.
