PRESCHOOL
The following illustrates a random
draw of abuse and affect/effect cards for the years of three, four, and
five. Affect/Effect cards have been drawn from the white strand and are
reflective of the child who internalizes his anger. (See Early
Childhood,
Late Childhood, and Early Adolescence for examples of a child who
externalizes
anger.) Note the over generalization of the "ed" language rule at age
three
and the emergence of unusual behaviors rooted in an unrealistic belief,
i.e., that by covering one's head with a blankie one can protect
himself.
At age four, the refinement of grammatical rules and an exponential
growth
in vocabulary, accompanies the ability to truly imagine. A
developmental
skill the networks have capitalized on. Because, at age five, this
little
boy will not enter his parent's bedroom does not necessarily mean his
father
is the perpetrator. It only means he is scared of big beds. This child
is never validated , meaning three puzzle pieces remain removed
from the preschool silhouette, providing a symbolic representation of
the
part of the little boy that remains hurt and in need of acknowledgment,
validation, and healing.
Three-Years-Old
You are a Big-Boy at
three-years-old. You greet every moment of every day with enthusiasm.
You love cars and trucks, "helping" Mommy and Daddy, picking up and
carrying as much as big people, and discovering just how big an item
you can push and pull. You know that bigger is always better. You are
winning the "No Nap" game and you are
very proud to be peeing in the potty. |
