Many professionals are just not aware of typical child development and how sexual abuse impacts the physical, emotional, cognitive, language, and social-emotional development of the child.
The curriculum most professionals have experienced on the topic of sexual abuse, consists of the presentation of a case study and small group discussion. MESSAGE is very different kind of teaching curriculum at the university and post-university levels, yet, common at elementary and secondary levels of instruction.
Using puzzle boards, age cards, abuse cards and affect/effect cards, MESSAGE takes the participant out of the world of analytical thought --and into the world of behaviors, thoughts and emotions that can only be experienced as a child who is sexually abused.
After six years of piloting to develop this curriculum, we can say with confidence--it does reliably teach to the stated objectives.
